The Durban Point Waterfront Management Association (DPWMA) is dedicated to transforming this iconic area into the most liveable space within the greater Durban region by providing the best maintenance and management services. Our Mission

As a non-profit organisation, DPWMA manages and maintains the Durban Point Waterfront to the highest standards. Through meticulous upkeep and strategic planning, we ensure a clean, safe, and flourishing environment for all who live, work, and invest here.

We aim to cultivate an inspiring, multicultural destination that fosters investment confidence, economic growth, and a dynamic blend of business and leisure. By integrating sustainability, heritage preservation, and innovation, DPWMA is shaping a future where people and commerce coexist.

Our Role & Responsibilities

Through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the eThekwini Municipality, Catalytic Projects, DPWMA is entrusted with:

  • General management of the precinct: DPWMA manages and maintains all infrastructure in the area.
  • Security services, including electronic surveillance: DPWMA boosts a state-of-the-art Security Control Room that is manned 24/7, 365 days per year.  The area is covered by more than 80 high resolution security cameras. Security patrols are done day and night and include nightly dog patrols.
  • Infrastructure upkeep, including roads and pathways.
  • Policy creation and procedural updates.
  • Financial oversight, including levy collection.
  • Canal management and operations: Canal water is tested quarterly to ensure the water quality remains within acceptable standards.
  • Cleaning, landscaping, and urban maintenance.

Durban Point Waterfront is rooted in history, marking key milestones in South Africa’s past:

1497

Vasco da Gama moored in Terra del Natal.

1835

Durban (Port Natal) founded.

1860

First passenger railway line: Durban to the Harbour. 

1861

Construction of Vetch's Pier. 

1900

Mahatma Gandhi's residence. 

1940

Perla Gibson (Lady in White) sang for every ship entering or leaving the harbour. 

2003

The modern revitalisation of Point Waterfront began.
